Maclean’s Magazine (Canada’s national weekly current affairs magazine) February 6, 2013 by Alan Parker 3,000 passengers and lots of sunscreen on largest naked cruise in history Sometime in the late afternoon on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 — an hour or so after the cruise ship Carnival Freedom leaves its home port of Fort Lauderdale, Florida — the ship’s captain will make an announcement on the ship’s public address system. The captain’s message will go something like this: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are now in international waters. Please feel free to disrobe.” And with that, approximately 3,000 passengers aboard the Carnival Freedom will doff duds andRead More →

This week’s episode of Murdoch Mysteries on CBC involved a “naturist colony”. Murdoch Mysteries is a drama, currently set in 1900, that revolves around Detective William Murdoch of the Toronto Constabulary who investigates murder using forensic techniques of the time. (think CSI from 100 years ago) The show is currently in its 6th season. While 1900 is a bit early for naturism in Canada, it is not completely out of the realm of possibility. They must have done their research well because they were fairly accurate about the philosophy – right down to the gruff German leader. (although at times, his accent sounded more ScottishRead More →

Robert, a Bare Oaks member, suggested that we do a media release during this week’s heat wave. So we sent out the following by email: Nudity: The natural way to deal with the heat The human body is very capable of handling this heat wave that Southern Ontario is experiencing. But the key is to remove all clothing so that the skin can do its job. Even a bathing suit or a pair of shorts will impede the body’s ability to dissapate heat by confusing their thermoregulatory systems. In fact, most people’s natural ability to control body temperature is dormant because we spend all ourRead More →

The call box at the entrance to Sun Valley Gardens circa 1964 Some people will have noticed that we have the old call box from Sun Valley Gardens hanging on the wall in the Bare Oaks office. The club had a significant impact on Ontario’s naturist scene. Almost every existing club in Southern Ontario (and a few that have since closed) in some way owe their existence to former members of SVG. A 1961 interview with Karl and Marlies Ruehle, owners of Sun Valley Gardens, has been posted in the CBC’s archives. They are being interviewed by a young June Callwood on CBC-TV’s Close-Up. http://archives.cbc.ca/lifestyle/living/clips/17573/ Note:Read More →

Mark Blinch, a photographer with the Reuters News Agency, contacted us in June about a project he was doing on “what it means to get back to nature,  movements on how people find alternatives to cope with big city living, and what it means to our health when we are absent from nature.”  He wanted to know if he could explore the naturist movement in that context.  We agreed and he spent a few days at Bare Oaks both as a participant and as a reporter.  The fact that he took his time and tried it himself really shows in the resulting video: http://blogs.reuters.com/photo/2011/09/19/naturism-these-images-contain-nudity/ TheseRead More →

In today’s Globe & Mail, Ian Brown talks about having a “Naked lunch – and naked breakfast“ at the Bare Bistro at Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park. You can read the article online by clicking here. Nobody at Bare Oaks had any idea that a Globe & Mail reporter had been there. He simply checked into one of the rooms like everyone else and didn’t tell anybody why he was there. Which is fine, of course, since we treat all our guest with equal respect. It’s just more useful for reporters to identify themselves if they want to spend some time discussing the philosophy ofRead More →
